Vacation 2004: The Story After
It were 4 marvelous days that I’ve spent around the country. So let me elaborate a bit about my wanders through Bulgaria.
Last Thursday I started off very early in the morning with the bus from the brand new bus station in Sofia to Shumen. There, „Bratcheda“ Dobrian was waiting for me at the Shumen bus station. After we spent some time businesswise – we went to the Shumen city library where I finally managed to find some books and materials that I’ll be using for my research exam paper for the coming exam in Medieval Bulgarian Cultural History. (Sidenote: Dobrian’s father’s connections really helped for me finding the books. Thanks!). Anyhow, after that we spent some time around Shumen – a town that I haven’t been to for quite a while – maybe four or five years now was my last visit to Shumen. The night was great too – at first we had dinner with Dobrian’s parents and I entered in some very long, but very very interesting chat with Dobrian’s father.
The next morning we started off to Varna. We got on one of the many mini buses that were on the bus station and in less than hour we were in Varna, waiting a bit for Chris to pick us up. Then, she tooks us to Sasha’s place. Bratcheda and I had a coffee, chat with everyone at Sasha’s place – Sasha, Chris, Svetla (I haven’t seen these people since one of the last BBQs that were hosted at the House) and then we went to the beach. I think that in Varna almost everything is in a walking distance – the beach was something like 20 minutes from where Sasha’s apartment was. At the beach I finally managed to get hold of VJ, since he was picking his phone. Anyhow, we finally met and it was a nice chat at the beach. I’ve haven’t seen this guy for a normal talk for maybe something like an year or so.
That day was August the 6th – the birthday of a very close friend of mine – Mio. Happy Birthday Mio, dear! :)
Mio is from Varna and guess where we went – to a party! It was a hell of a party! One of the best to which I have been for the past couple of months. I met lots of people that I knew and lots of people that I got to know. It’s simply out of description to elaborate about such a party. We partied on until something like very early in the morning (don’t know what time since I left intentionally my watch in Sofia).
The next morning we got a plan to go spent a relaxing day at the beach. Good plan, but the weather sucked. It was raining all day, just like Elin Pelin’s work „It rained, it rained, a whole Sunday). Well, it was not Sunday, but Saturday, but still the beach plan for the day was ruined by the weather. Instead of the beach, we spent a movie-watching day at the apartment.
In the evening there was another party – this time at Sveta’s place. Two parties in a row. Just perfect for me. Especially when looooots of people show up and the party is as the saying goes „party at the max“. Great party Sve!
If you could have seen me at the party, I was quite distinctively seen because of the little growing-sparking neon light that I hung on my neck like a necklace. There is something unique and fresh to see someone (in that case that was me) in the dark and something little to spark in blue on his chest! ;)
Next day we finally made it the beach. At „Slanchev Den“ the beach is very nice. Indeed, what really surprised me was the water was quite warm after the whole-day rain showers the previous day. It was a day of total relaxation for me. A bit of swimming (sidenote: I really have to begin regular swim practices in the fall because my fitness in that aspect is quite…. well it is not it used to be when I was on the swim team in high school), a bit beach volleyball, a bit Tangram practice. Simply Sun, Sand, Swim – the triple „S“.
In the evening this time there was no party in someone’s house. We decided that instead of a party we will go for fish and chips and beer at some restaurant at the Beach Alley downtown Varna. Well, it was not that easy. We spent more than two hours of trying to find a free table somewhere, somewhere at the whole lenght of the Beach Alley. We finally managed to do so and the fish was maybe even more delicious because of the walking we previously had done.
After that we went to the „Naduvaemite“ (in English – the „Inflatables“) – a superb bar right on the South Beach of Varna where all the furniture is made of inflatable chairs. Very nice house music there and very nice cocktails. I recommend it to anyone who will be going to Varna soon! The feeling of having a drink with friends, chatting and watching the sea in 3 a.m. is simply unmatched.
Next day was the „pack-up“ day. Bratcheda went back to Shumen at noon. I went downtown to buy a ticket for the bus to Sofia. With Chris and Dobrian we went to a very nice place called „Look“ (photo below)
After that I took a goodbye with my hostess for these three days in Varna – Sasha. Then I went to see VJ and his place and then Mio for yet another drink becasue I got on the bus.
Four days that really got me out of the matrix I had been before that. Four days that cleared a bit my mind and made me not to think of all the problems, worries, tasks, etc. etc. that are waiting for me here, in Sofia. A true vacation.
Last, but not least here goes a little „thank you“ to all the people that made this vacation possible in some way or another – Bratcheda (for mastermind the travel plans, etc.), Sasha (for the apartment, for greatest morning coffee I’ve had recently), Svetla, Chris, Mio…. Everyone!
A great vacation!
